The Theme of The Odyssey

A reoccuring theme throughout books 11-22 is fight for what you want.

In book 11 it proves that you should fight for what you want. In this book odysseus visits the kingdom of the dead and the spirits tell him that he should keep trying his best to get back to Ithica and get his life back. "By God, I'd rather slave on earth for another man... than rule down here over all the breathless dead." (p.265 l. 556-558) When Achilles says this to odysseus he is arguing that even ruling the underworld is not as good as being alive on earth living your own life so odysseus. When odysseus is coming to the end of his journey he meets with Achilles who tells him that he should continue his journey to get home and not just accept death.

In book 22 it shows the theme because odysseuses fought and got what he wanted. Odysseus fights the final battle with the suitors and then he returns as the king. "Light me a fire to purify this house." (p. 454 l. 518) This shows that odysseus is back in control, the suitors are gone, and after the house is purified things will be back to the way they were before the suitors arrived. Odysseus fought the suitors, prevailed, and his house is back to the way it was.

Telemachus

Telemachus is not a hero. Throughout his quest he never has to over come any challenges without his father.
The boy is supplied a ship frrom the suitors with a full crew. This shows that he never had to struggle to find a crew or buy a ship. That is why tellamachus is not a hero.

Odysseus is a hero. He encounters challenges that he must over come even without a hero partner. Poiseiden threatens to kill odysseues by cursing the sea. Odysseus fights for his life and uses the magic scarf to live through. That is why oddyseuss is a hero.

Call to adventure- Jesus was born the son of God and born of the virgin Marry and knew that his job in life was to spread the word of God.

Supernatural Guide- Jesus has a supernatural guide. The guide is God. He tells Jesus what to do and helps him accomplish his quest.

Crossing the threshold- Jesus leaves his home in Nazareth to find the prophets of God.

Hero partners- Jesus' hero partners are the disciples. The each go out to accoplish a specific task involving spreading Christianity.

Double Bouble Hero's

In the story Arizona, Victor partakes in a quest much like a hero's quest. Some people might think that this makes Victor a hero, but I disagree. One large step in the hero's quest that Victor does not under go is crossing the threshold. "Thomas Builds-the-fire and Victor sat next to each other in the airplane..." The fact that Victor took an airplane to get to another place instead of a more unusual fashion is not a magical journey to a new land. The second reason that i believe Victor is not a hero is because he never loses the guide. "I came because of your father." This shows that the guide escorted Victor all the way through the journey and he never had to prove himself. The final reason that Victor is not a hero is because he never becomes the master of two worlds. "They both searched for words to end the journey." This shows that the journey ends and they return home with no way of going back and live there lives the same as they used to. Victor is not a true hero because although the quest he encounters seems much like that of a hero's it lacks some of the most important factors of being a true hero's quest.
